The Fall from Heaven's Peak

520 words • Heavenly Demon's Return

The wind howled through Heaven's Peak, carrying with it the scent of blood and broken promises.

Lin Feng stood at the edge of the precipice, his white robes stained crimson. Behind him, five figures—men he had once called brothers—watched with cold, calculating eyes.

"You should have accepted the offer," said Zhang Wei, the eldest of them, his voice as steady as the sword at his hip. "The Heavenly Demon Sect was destined to fall. You were merely... collateral."

Lin Feng laughed. It was a broken sound, ragged and wet. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, and his left arm hung uselessly at his side. The meridian had been shattered—deliberately, carefully—by the very person who had taught him how to cultivate it.

"Brother Zhang," Lin Feng said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Three years ago, you swore an oath beneath the peach tree. Do you remember?"

Zhang Wei's expression did not change. "Oaths are for those who have the luxury of honor."

The others said nothing. Li Mei, who had been his closest companion, refused to meet his eyes. Chen Gang stared at the ground. Wang Xu and Zhao Yun shifted uncomfortably, but none of them moved to help.

Lin Feng looked at each of them one final time. He did not plead. He did not rage. Something inside him—something that had been burning bright for twenty-two years—went very, very quiet.

"If I survive this," he said, "I will remember everything."

Then he stepped backward.

The fall lasted three seconds. The impact should have killed him instantly. But as consciousness faded, Lin Feng felt something stir within his chest—a warmth, ancient and vast, like the first breath of morning after an endless night.

The jade pendant at his throat, the one his master had given him on his deathbed, pulsed once.

And the abyss answered.

He woke to rain.

Cold. Relentless. The kind of rain that washed away blood and buried secrets. Lin Feng opened his eyes to a sky the color of old iron and a body that should not have been whole.

Every meridian, shattered days ago at Heaven's Peak, now hummed with an energy he did not recognize. It was not the qi he had been taught. It was older. Deeper. It moved through him like dark water through ancient stone.

He sat up slowly. The valley floor was littered with rocks and tangled undergrowth. By all rights, his body should have been a ruin.

Instead, he was healing.

Lin Feng pressed a hand to his chest and felt the jade pendant—cracked now, but still warm—against his skin. His master's final gift.

"What... is this?" he whispered.

The pendant said nothing. But in the back of his mind, like a half-remembered dream, characters began to form. Ancient characters. Forbidden characters.

The Heavenly Demon Arts.

Lin Feng closed his eyes. The rain continued to fall. And in that desolate valley, far from the world that had cast him aside, something began again.
